SYNCRAFT Joins EBC AgroBio

New Opportunities for Certified Biochar
Biochar is a valuable raw material with a wide range of applications. Whether in the construction industry, metallurgy, or as a carbon sink—the biochar produced in SYNCRAFT retrofit power plants has been impressing users for years with its high carbon content, consistent quality, and versatility.
With the introduction of the patented Desorber Mk1, SYNCRAFT is now expanding the potential uses of biochar to include another important area of application: agriculture.
The Next Step Toward EBC AgroBio
In order for biochar to be used as a fertilizer or soil amendment, additional requirements must be met. The key criteria are the provisions of the EU Fertilizer Regulation and the quality standards of the European Biochar Certificate (EBC).
This is exactly where the Desorber Mk1, developed by SYNCRAFT, comes in.
Through targeted post-treatment of biochar, the properties required for EBC AgroBio certification are achieved—without altering the carbon content or the fundamental quality of the biochar.
What makes this special is that the desorber can be Reversepowerplants into both new and existing Reversepowerplants and requires only about two percent additional energy.
Successful Implementation at Reinthalmühle
The successful implementation of this technology at Reinthalmühle Holzverarbeitungs GmbH in Upper Austria demonstrates that it works not only in theory.
As a wood-processing company with strong regional ties, Reinthalmühle uses wood chips from its own forests as raw material, thereby creating a closed-loop value chain—from regional wood to energy generation to the production of high-quality biochar.
Following the retrofit of the existing reverse power plant with a Desorber Mk1, the facility now produces biochar that meets the requirements for the EBC AgroBio quality label and can therefore be used directly as a fertilizer or soil amendment.
The corresponding certificate is publicly available and confirms successful implementation in practice.

Austria's market continues to grow
The importance of certified biochar is steadily increasing. Already today, the majority of EBC-certified biochar producers in Austria rely on SYNCRAFT’s technology.
Currently, 11 of the 14 EBC-certified biochar plants in Austria are manufactured by SYNCRAFT. With the plants currently under construction, Austria’s annual biochar production capacity will grow to approximately 10,000 metric tons in the near future.
